Mrs. Doreen Ryan Turner

Widow

9th Street

April 17th, 1973

I haven’t got nothing to say to you.

It’s an awful thing you’re doing, digging up other people’s pasts, rooting around in dirt like an old hog. Leave people alone to live their own lives, it’s nothing at all to you.

I haven’t got nothing to say.

My mother was an O’Sullivan, the last girl, Nellie. My father was Conal Ryan. My husband was descended from the Donahues, though his father come from the town here.

My husband was killed by the train, I got three kids, I work full time in a store downtown. Look, we lived in this house here for years now, you can come in and see how we keep it up, come on in and look around to suit yourself, but I haven’t got nothing to say to that box there in your hand.

The past should be left alone. Leave people alone. Isn’t there no privacy?

If you want to know what I think, I think it’s cruel. It’s cruel, and I’m sorry you don’t have more sense.

Look, you’re wasting my time. I got three kids to feed. Go find yourself some other hobby, mister. I haven’t got nothing to say.

Not a thing.
